Vintage Playgrounds

playground_HeightsRocket

I love old playground equipment! In my free & ignorant childhood, I mistakenly took these fantastic structures for granted! I mean, they look like stuff!

Like dinosaurs ..

playground_triceratops

..and tugboats!

playground_tugboat

Did I mention dinosaurs?!

playground_trex

I never thought there would come a day when I’d have to trade these wrought & welded behemoths in for cold, slippery, safe plastic structures. I miss the feel of thick,  globbed-on paint & warm iron bars on my bare palms & knees!

I miss old McDonald’s equipment the most!

playground_mayormccheese

Those crap plastic climbers, you can’t get to the top without falling! You’re not supposed to climb on top .. what’s the fun in that?

As soon as I get a yard, I’m starting a collection! Or maybe re-creating some myself .. anyone out there a decent welder? Serious inquiries accepted!

Every time I’m in the city, I feel like royalty!

Perhaps it’s the tourists, snapping pictures energetically of the stuff I look at day-to-day. Or maybe it’s the groups, organizations, and protesters that gather right here to get their voices heard.

DC_bear

Maybe it’s the landscape. The roaming lawns showcasing monuments, the classic architecture framing courtyards, carousels, and sculpture gardens. There are fountains everywhere!

fountain_arches

You never know when a random Elephant Parade or jazz festival will start up! Just driving down Constitution Avenue, I see displays and demonstrations to beat the band! Get out of your car, and you’ll stumble upon some of the most beautifully tended courtyards you ever laid paws on!

DC_1

It’s because I guess, like Louie XIV, we know we’re being looked at! We imagine any moment, some king, queen, or dignitary will step on any given sidewalk at any time, and proclaim to America’s polished seat of power, “Impress me”!

We deliver with gusto ..

fountain_spit22

I like to pretend I’m that visiting queen .. seeking allegiance, shouting, “Show me your pools,  & your well-tended walkways! Show me your power with cherry-blossom strewn paddle boat rides!”

Yep, every time I’m there, I pretend that!

fountain_kois

It’s fun! :P Try it!

Coraline ~ RealD

coraline22

The year was 2003, and I had just shut the covers on Neil Gaimans’ new-ish & short-ish tale Coraline. I had, upon beginning the read, been eager to sing praises for Gaiman’s strongest attempt at children’s literature to date. But when my eyes slid from that last page, and the lovely hard-bound storybook lay closed in my lap, all I can remember thinking was, “what a rip!”

Excuse, if you please, the correlations to Alice (what modern-day fairy story isn’t ripe with those?). No, the more blatant rip I’m referencing is this one: Coraline is very like an even lesser known children’s tale, The Thief Of Always by Clive Barker. I mean, it’s all there! The magic antique house with dissolving perimeters, the talking cat with the question mark-shaped tail, all of it! It’s exactly the same, except the unsatisfied child-hero in Thief is a boy, not a girl, and instead of buttons, there’s a fishpond to contend with.

But, the creative world works in mysterious ways. Coraline the story may be a homage at best, but Coraline the RealD experience is something else again! While Clive deserves his propers for the plot, theme, and scenery of Coraline, doesn’t he have enough visual genius to his credit already? Who would back a kids’ film boasting Barker’s name, anyway? No one that’s who! And this 3D masterpiece just had to be made somehow! If it took a name like Gaiman’s to do it, Whimsey’s will be done!

I mean, have you seen this RealD? It’s spectacular! Okay, I sound like your grandma, but it really blows my mind how everything looks real, not blurred or cheesy at all! Here is all I’ve ever wanted from animation: to experience limitless visual wonders, as realistically as possible, close up. Coraline, with Tim Burton’s funhouse aesthetics, provides the perfect reality to get lost and wander ’round in.  And, there’s more movies just like her to come! I am really excited about all the diversely animated 3D movies featuring RealD that are presently in the works. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs in 2010?! Can not wait!

Now, it’s come to my attention that the last 3D showings of Coraline are this weekend, and after that it will only be out in lame ol’ regular 2D. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice film and all, but after my RealD affair I can’t imagine enjoying the plot as much without the accompaniment of  all those glorious visuals! I recommend the lot of you trip out & see this 3D film while it lasts! Me? I’m purchasing a big screen for the DVD release, asap!

:P

Canvaspalooza!

yosukeueno_forestiaYosuke Ueno’s Forestia ~ 2008

I ask a lot out of art! Hope, capacity, space, Astoundment … a glimpse into real & welcoming surreality … That’s a hefty order, especially for 2D! Here are three wonderful artists I’ve found this month, who’s collective medium of expression happens to be canvas!

The 1st two were featured in the latest edition of Hi-Fructose magazine. The 3rd is a local artist who’s installation is on display at GMU until February 7th…  I strongly recommend a visit in person!

Plush Life

fl_wonderpus22

plush_bearIt is assumed that at 24 years of age, one would abandon such childish Nonsense as stuffed toys around the house. This may be a fair assumption for most, but my stubborn inner only-child won’t give up that easy! She’s masterfully concocted a system that keeps my “grown-up” life stuffed with fluff ~ Functional Plushie Decor (FPD) can be found in almost every room of my abominably adorable apartment!

I don’t boink stuffed animals. I’ve simply managed to replace a few otherwise dreary household items with cuddlier, fluffier versions (often with a big happy grin sewn on) to ensure a friendly home environment! Here are just a few of my FPD items that keep the maturity levels at my house comfortably low:

Lion Towel

plush_lionset

This towel never growls when he’s thrown in the dryer.

Octo-Loofah

Within the sphere of my loofah menagerie! R.I.P. Donnie Dachshund..

Bunny Feetz

These Merry Janes are shoes, not slippers!

Bronto Feetz

Mousey Bookmark

You are jealous of his magnet paws & fly curly whiskers, no?

Plush Plant

plush_plantset

If the Little Shop Of Horrors sold stuffed plants, all that man-eating business would have never gone down~

Don’t hate .. I am 100% comfortable with my fur-filled feng-shui, & I’m not the only one! Here’s some examples functioning pseudo-plushies we’ve all come to know and love:

Celebrated Pseudo-Plushies throughout the Ages

calvinhobbes

  • Calvin ~ This rascal’s affection for stuffed tiger Hobbs borders on deranged, but hey, at least he’s open about it! Calvin totes his inanimate companion to any occasion, despite ridicule, & does he let callous judgments from his peers get him down? Nope! This dreamer demands respect toward his fuzzy life-partner, making him an appropriate poster-child for proud plushies everywhere!

pooh681

  • Christopher Robin ~ Like Calvin & Hobbs, this boy/bear relationship depicts the lighter side of Only Child Syndrome. This kid’s cure for loneliness is just a 100 acre wood away.. what worries me about Chris is his absence in some of the Pooh tales, implying that the poor boy isn’t interacting with his plush pals as much as living through them. Freudian much?
  • tanky11Tank Girl ~ Before there was Booga (or Naomi Watts), there was Camp Koala taking the coveted shotgun seat to ol’ Tanky’s outlandish outbackery! Our vixen of violence even went so far as to mourn the explosion-induced death of her fuzzy faux companion.. one of the only bouts of remorse Baldy has ever suffered in her entire life of crime. Easily the grandest example of a character’s preference for plush over people… even mutant kangaroo-people.

Reverting back to childhood may have it’s drawbacks, but I’ve yet to find them :P .. what steps have you taken to ensure whimsy in your grown-up life?

Were The World Mine ~ Cute, Not Cultworthy

weretheworld

“You have to see this film,” my dears Lauren & Adam proclaimed triumphantly to me, “It’s looks so… whimsical!” The ensuing view of the trailer cinched the deal. Were The World Mine, released around here December 12th, is portrayed as a surreal, sparkling dreamscape! Of course, this self-proclaimed Whimsibitch agreed to attend with gusto..

With reviews like “dreamy”, “surreal”, and “the next Hedwig(!!!)” flying around, any Whimsibitch knows when skepticism is in order. I consider myself a bit of a surrealism connoisseur, who has on more than one occasion fell victim to some disappointingly unpalatable consumption. Furthermore, flagrant comparison to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a cinematic staple if you happen to have any interest in alternative lifestyle, borders blasphemy. Were The World Mine seemed to have a world of sweet promises riding on it’s white-winged shoulders.

Okay, so both musicals tell the tale of a gay youth seeking acceptance in rural America. But while Hedwig invokes the love-child of Aristophanes & Ziggy Stardust, the classically-themed World is a healthy mash-up of Bjork’s Dancer In The Dark and Dead Poet’s Society. These subjects, fleshed out over the film’s overall  Shakespearean skeleton, does result in satisfying surreality at times. About half of the film is a glittering, dreamed-up figment of musically-inclined imagination, presented by stifled dreamer Timothy, a fantastic character bent on being himself no matter what the opposition may be.

As a perspective fantasy, this film excels. Charming visuals are limited (conveniently, considering the low-budget) to a reality Timothy can sense but refuses to accept. Taking place in an all-boy’s academy, this set relies  much on the high-school gym dynamic, as do the props and costumes lent to Timothy’s fantasized musical interludes. The beautiful (but few) songs consist of resounding a cappellas featuring mostly male vocals, with pianos as heard through the doors of a mid-sized gymnasium thrown in from time to time.

From the drama teacher’s (coincidental?) decision to cast Tim & his rugby-jock crush as lead faeries in the  school play, to his mother’s begrudged acceptance of the task to sew him wings, little by little our hero melds his own dreamworld into his stifled settlement’s reluctant reality. Where in Hedwig we witness the becoming of self through experience, this film emphasizes the more fantastic effect of a strong, steadfast persona on a surprisingly (considering the times) unenlightened community. Uh oh .. it’s effing Angus all over again!

angus1

Seriously now though, it’s not very often that a controversial character remains this headstrong in the face of adversity – wrong or right, one is expected to learn a thing or two about themselves along the way. There are friends, families, all that constitutes a personal support structure, to consider.  Somehow, the character of Timothy is allowed to rebuke these things, all under a law that deems acceptance an uncompromisable virtue, damn the cost.

Thankfully for Tim, the commitment he directs towards his  ideals in this situation does, eventually, play out in his favour… Virtue triumphs! As I, Hedwig, and every other dreamer could probably tell you, this isn’t often the end result. In this respect, is Were The World Mine a realistic account on how big lifestyle-decisions gain credence? No indeed ..  But Timothy’s outlook and unrelenting acceptance of himself is admirable, while being admittedly exaggerated.  This Whimsibitch can excuse exaggeration. It’s just the sort of surreality our kind tends to prefer ;)
